The azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea offers a close and marvellous corner to approach Elba island: Cavo, a village at a short distance from the extreme northeastern tip of the island.

The small village dates back to the Roman period with he construction of one of the houses near the promontory of Capo Castello, of which today remain some  walls. In medieval texts the location is given as Caput Sancti Mannati de Ilba. In 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi stopped here briefly on his way from the mainland to the island of Caprera.
Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Cavo became the beloved place of the family holiday resort Tonietti, which administered the iron mines in the district of Rio Marina. In the presence of Tonietti is linked to the construction of three major structures: the Villa Bellariva (neo-Gothic), the Villa Tonietti and Chapel Tonietti. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Cavo was the summer residence of the Latinist Concetto Marchesi.
